You are used to picking up prescriptions in a standard bottle with a standard label. But did you know that not every patient can use medicine exactly as it comes “off the shelf”? That’s where compounding comes in — the art and science of creating personalized medications.
Compounding is when a pharmacist prepares a custom medication tailored to an individual patient’s needs. Instead of mass-produced, one-size-fits-all drugs, compounding allows for adjustments in strength, form, ingredients, or de-livery method. This practice dates back to the very roots of pharmacy, and today it is especially valuable for patients with unique requirements that commercially available products don’t meet. Compounded prescriptions may be recommended if:
You need a different dosage form. For example, turning a pill into a liquid or cream for easier swallowing or topical use.
You have allergies or sensitivities. Compounding can remove dyes, gluten, lactose, or preservatives that cause reactions.
A medication is discontinued or in shortage. Compounding can recreate essential therapies that aren’t available commercially.
You need a unique strength or combination. Children, pets, or patients with very specific dosing needs benefit from precisely measured formulations.
You prefer a more convenient form. For in-stance, a pharmacist may flavor a liquid for a child or create a troche (lozenge) instead of a tablet.
Compounding puts the focus back where it be-longs: on the patient. Our sister store, Norland Avenue Pharmacy has the area’s only PCAB Ac-credited compounding lab and will deliver your compounds to our store for you to pick up for free. If you’ve ever struggled to take your medicine, reacted to an ingredient, or been told a medication isn’t available anymore, ask about compounding. It may be the solution that helps you or your loved one get the care you need.
